How to Pay in China: Alipay and WeChat Pay for Foreigners

Set up foreign-card payments, understand verification and fees, and keep practical backups for everyday purchases in China.

Quick Answer

Foreign visitors can link eligible international bank cards to Alipay and WeChat Pay for merchant purchases in mainland China. Install the apps before departure, keep the phone number that receives your verification texts active, and complete any identity checks requested in the app. Carry a physical card and a small RMB cash backup. A linked foreign card is for purchases; it does not make every transfer or wallet feature available.

Alipay for Foreigners: Set Up Before Departure

Use the Alipay app for mainland China. Alipay+ is a network connecting participating home wallets; it is not a separate tourist app that everyone must install.

  1. Download Alipay from your device's official app store. Register with your mobile number, selecting the correct country code, and finish SMS verification.
  2. Choose the international visitor experience if the app offers it. Open the bank-card area and add your eligible overseas card. Follow the current prompts for card details and your bank's authorization.
  3. If identity verification is requested, use your passport and enter your name consistently with your travel document. Finish requested checks before leaving; do not assume that adding a card completes every verification step.
  4. Open the payment area and confirm the linked card is available as a funding method. You do not need to top up an RMB balance simply to make a supported card-funded merchant purchase.
  5. At a merchant in mainland China, either scan their merchant QR code and confirm the amount, or show your payment code for the cashier to scan. Check the funding card and any charge on the confirmation screen.

This setup follows Alipay's visitor guidance and Shanghai's card-linking guide. Screens and menu names vary with language and app version.

WeChat Pay for Foreigners: Card and Passport Checks

Use your existing WeChat account if you have one; otherwise register with your overseas phone number. Tencent confirms that an overseas number can be used for this process.

  1. Update WeChat, then open Me → Services → Wallet where those options are shown. If the entry is absent, use the app's current payment help instead of creating multiple accounts.
  2. Open the card area and link an eligible international debit or credit card. Complete the requested cardholder details and issuer authorization.
  3. Follow any identity prompts using an accepted document such as a passport. Additional verification may be needed for higher payment limits.
  4. At checkout, choose a supported merchant payment and check which linked card will be charged. A person-to-person transfer or red packet is a different feature from buying a meal.

Tencent's international-card guidance explains registration, verification and merchant coverage. Your bank can still decline a payment, even after card linking succeeds.

Fees and Limits: Check the Checkout Screen

There are three separate costs to consider: a payment-platform service fee, your bank's foreign-transaction fee, and currency conversion. A platform fee waiver does not remove your issuer's charges.

Tencent's May 2026 announcement describes a 90-day international-card processing-fee waiver for first-time users, beginning with their first transaction and covering spending up to RMB 1,000 per day. Confirm eligibility and the actual displayed fee in WeChat Pay; do not assume an older account qualifies. Tencent also describes fee-free payments of RMB 200 or less in its cross-border payments explanation.

For Alipay, read the current fee notice before confirming rather than applying WeChat's promotion to it. Alipay's card FAQ says the exchange rate comes from the card network and issuing bank. Payment limits depend on verification, the card issuer and the transaction; use the limit shown in your account rather than treating a published maximum as guaranteed approval.

Merchant QR Codes, Transfers and Cash

Alipay's international-card FAQ distinguishes everyday merchant purchases from personal transfers, red packets and financial services. If a QR code asks you to send money to an individual and your foreign card is unavailable, ask the shop for its merchant payment option or use another accepted method. Do not try to fix this by repeatedly topping up a balance.

Keep small RMB notes for urgent purchases, with a physical card as another backup. Larger hotels and stores are more useful places to ask about international-card terminals than assuming every small food stall has one. The State Council's visitor payment guide covers mobile payments, bank cards and cash.

What to Do When Payment Fails

What you seeUseful next step
No SMS codeCheck the country code, roaming and access to the number registered with the app. Use official account support if you cannot receive it.
Card linked but declinedCheck the bank's authorization notice; try another eligible card or payment app.
Passport check pendingFinish the identity prompts in the app. Card linking and identity approval are separate checks.
Card missing for one QR codeAsk whether it is a merchant collection code rather than a personal transfer.
Slow connection or errorCheck the transaction history first. If no successful charge is recorded, retry on mobile data or use a backup.
Charge appears twice or status is unclearKeep the receipt and transaction IDs; contact the merchant and official app support before retrying.

Pay for the urgent item using a working method, then troubleshoot later. Never share your password, full card details or one-time code with someone offering to "unlock" the account.

Before You Fly

Keep access to your registered phone number, your passport, at least one eligible linked card and a second payment method. Save your issuer's support contact. On arrival, use a small legitimate merchant purchase to check that the setup works; opening a payment code at home cannot prove every Chinese merchant transaction will succeed.

FAQ

Can foreigners use Alipay and WeChat Pay without a Chinese bank account?

Eligible overseas bank cards can be linked for supported mainland merchant purchases. Account verification and issuer approval still apply; a Chinese bank account is not required for this direct card-linking route.

Can I transfer money to friends with my foreign card on Alipay?

Alipay's international-card guidance excludes personal transfers and red packets from supported foreign-card spending. Use the card for eligible merchant purchases.

Is WeChat Pay free for foreign cards in 2026?

Fees depend on transaction size and eligibility. Tencent announced a first-time-user waiver for 90 days, up to RMB 1,000 daily, and describes fee-free payments of RMB 200 or less. Check the confirmation screen and your bank's separate charges.

Should I still bring cash to China?

Yes. Small RMB notes, a physical card and a second payment app give you alternatives when verification, connection or card authorization fails.
